In the late 1890s, John Guitar brought his cotton business into West Texas and New Mexico. He purchased his first ranch at Big Spring and expanded his holdings of grassland throughout the two states over the next thirty years. At his death in 1936, John Guitar owned three ranches totaling 85,000 acres and had numerous smaller stock farms. He had feedlots where he fed cottonseed products and he is credited as the first person to ship fertilizer into West Texas. The third generation to take on this ranching empire is John's grandson Phil, whose ranching heritage comes from both his father Earl and mother Anita (Grissom). Phil runs cow-calf and yearling operations on several ranches totaling 50,000 acres. He and his wife Jane are dedicated volunteers for the Western Heritage Classic, a top notch ranch rodeo and festival held each year in Abilene.

An abundance of wildlife, rolling hills and fresh water
nestled on the Texas Caprock

Serious outdoor enthusiasts will be drawn to hunting for deer and hogs, turkeys, quail and dove on this vast stretch of Big Ranch Country. Fishing prospects are excellent as well. Bass, crappie and catfish in the clear, fresh oversized tank (That's Texas for pond!) are waiting for your day on the water! Guitar Ranch's experienced, professional outfitter is on hand to coordinate your successful trip.
Gracious hospitality. Delicious dining.
Get away the old-fashioned way.
Remodeled ranch bunkhouses will accommodate 14 individuals in original western style. Colorful and comfortable, the rooms are equipped to make where you sleep a great part of the trip. Sitting down to dinner in the cookhouse or "roughing it" at the chuck wagon camp site makes meal time the best time to enjoy the company of your group. If you pay attention and learn the secrets of the Guitar Ranch cooks – your home-cookin' will never be the same!

Hiking. Mountain biking. Trail riding. Photography.
The unspoiled, rugged terrain of the Caprock will present a challenge to experienced hikers, cyclists and horseback riders. Trail riders with their own horses are welcome on the ranch after completion of a written horsemanship assessment prior to booking. In this uniquely Texas environment, photographers will discover an eyeful of opportunities for sunrise and sunset shots, interesting nature and animal photos as well as great studies of landscape.
