Burnett Ranches (known worldwide as Four Sixes Ranch, or the "Sixes")
has had a long and illustrious history that initially began with
Samuel "Burk" Burnett. Development of the West brought
the end of the open range and the cattle drives, so Burk Burnett
began buying land at 25 cents an acre, establishing his first
headquarters near Wichita Falls where a small city still bears
his name. He was a forward-thinking businessman who forged a long,
loyal relationship with Comanche Chief Quanah Parker to lease
Indian land for grazing. He added more ranchland in the Texas
Panhandle and in King County near Guthrie. Today, the ranch is
owned and operated by the same family and runs primarily Angus
and black-baldy (Angus X Hereford crossbred) cattle and produces
top Quarter Horses in every category.

Anne Burnett Tandy (granddaughter of Burk Burnett) was a founder
of the American Quarter Horse Association. The family's avid interest
in breeding and raising fine Quarter Horses continues today through
the work done by the Four Sixes Horse Division. The ranch's breeding
program supplies horses for daily work by its cowboys, as well
as to followers of "Sixes" breeding in racing, performance
and ranch horse markets. Tour the ranch's state of the art breeding
barn and veterinary facility. See popular stallions who stand
here, as well as mares and their foals which carry on the bloodlines
of original 6666 ranch horses.

When a trip to town took several days, this old-fashioned
general store was built in the late 1800's as a commissary serving
ranch employees. You'll step back in time when you walk through
the door of the Four Sixes Supply House which still stocks all
types of provisions for locals and plenty of authentic souvenirs
for ranch visitors.

cowboys tell the history
of the "Sixes" as only
they can...because
they live it everyday. |
The
Four Sixes remains a vital part of the Texas cattle
industry. Ranch management practices have always been progressive,
functional and innovative, with a true respect for ranching
traditions. |
